Genealogy Programs

The Santa Clara County Historical & Genealogical Society (SCCHGS) will be sponsoring these Winter/Spring 2012 programs at the Santa Clara City Central Park Library, 2635 Homestead Road:

Quaker Research: Tuesday, January 17th, 6:15 p.m., Cedar Room

Jeff Moore, the SCCHGS Genealogy Society Librarian, will give a talk on Quaker records and how to research Quakers. Jeff spent five years researching his Quaker ancestors in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The extensive church, meeting and other Quaker records he discovered helped him document hundreds of Quaker lives.

Ancestry.com Search Techniques: Saturday, February 4th, 1:00 p.m., Redwood Room [flyer] [Advance Questions]

Laura Dansbury, Ancestry’s ‘Senior Product Manager for Search’ will bring along other product managers to discuss new and advanced product features and techniques that will help produce better results when searching Ancestry.com. Laura has many years of experience in web, online search and graphical information display focused on making web search easier and more powerful. Topics covered will include: Organizing and sharing your family tree; Breaking down brick walls; Getting the most out of your ‘Ancestry.com’ membership; and, Advanced search techniques. She will also discuss how soon Ancestry will be able to put the 1940 US Census records online after the federal government releases those records in April 2012.

Stephen Morse, PhD, a well received local genealogist and lecturer, will demonstrate his one-step web pages that zeros in on your family’s 1940 census profile. The 1940 census will not have a name index at the time of release. Census data is organized by the 1940 Enumeration Districts (EDs). Knowing the ED numbers for your family is essential to quickly finding your people in the census.

What’s New for Genealogists & Local History Researchers at Central Park Library: Tuesday, March 20th, 6:15 p.m., Redwood Room

Local History Librarian, Mary Hanel, will review some of the Library’s new reference books and resources for genealogists and historians. She will also show part of “The Better Part” public access TV documentary on ‘Genealogy’ that featured an interview with a Genealogy Society Library Consultant and a tour of Central Park Library’s Heritage Pavilion.

Genealogy Society’s 55th Anniversary Celebration: Tuesday, April 17th, 6:15 p.m., Redwood Room

The Santa Clara County Historical & Genealogical Society will celebrate its 55th anniversary as a Society and the 45th anniversary of its partnership with the Santa Clara City Library. There will be cake, treats, and displays. Favorite stories about overcoming brick walls and great family history discoveries made while doing research in the Library’s Genealogy Collection will be shared.

The Spring Beginner’s Genealogy Seminar Series will have three classes this year. Please RSVP for each part of the seminar that you plan to take.   Part 1 - GETTING STARTED - This session will explain the basics of getting started researching your genealogy. The class will help you discover what documents you have and what documents you need. You will learn what information is available from vital records and how this is useful to you. What is documentation? The class will explain what is a "source" and how to document those sources for future reference. We will get you started in completing Family Groups Sheets and Pedigree Charts.

  Part 2 - ORGANIZATION and INTERNET GENEALOGY - This class will explore organization of your genealogy materials. Learn the different methods of filing your information that will eliminate duplication and save you time. Seasoned genealogists will show you how they organized their materials. Explore the different genealogy reports beyond the basic Family Group Sheets. The session will also explore the different Genealogy websites, such as Rootsweb, Ancestry and Family Search. Learn the different types of websites available; free vs paid; and how to evaluate the accuracy of the information you find. You will learn about Message Boards that help you connect will other individuals who are looking for the same ancestors.

  Part 3 - US CENSUS and GENEALOGY SOFTWARE - Learn the importance of following your ancestors with the US Census. If your ancestors weren't famous, the census might contain the only record of their lives. This session will walk you through the US census through 1930. Different census years have different information, so it's important to learn what information is available. Learn what to do with this information and how to interpret clues about your ancestors and where they lived. Looking for a Genealogy Program for your computer? You will learn what to look for when choosing a computer program and how easy it is to input your information.
